Remembering...Baby Faith

An unfulfilled due date...one year come and gone. Oh, how our hearts ache for you baby Faith.

How softly you tiptoed
Into our world

Almost silently
And only a moment you stayed
But what an imprint
Your footsteps have left
Upon our hearts.

Never Forgotten.

Love You Forever,
Mommy and Daddy

Time Away...Post #98

It's the dilemma many of the bloggers I follow are facing...what to do with a blog that's been centered around infertility and loss AFTER you've had a baby. From reading her most recent post, it looks like Nity is dealing with it as she prepares to welcome her miracle baby, peesticksandstones is addressing her thoughts about blogging after having her precious little guy, Coleman (on June 22nd, not long after Segen) and M dealt with it in her writings as well. It's not to say that when, or more likely IF we try again in a few years we won't face some of the same challenges, but for now, it doesn't seem quite right to post pictures and exciting updates about a baby in a space that was reserved to share so much of my gut-wrenching sadness.

So for now, and maybe just for awhile, I'm going to step away from this blog and enjoy every moment of maternity leave I have left with my little guy...which is only 10 days. I want to thank everyone for all of the well-wishes and encouragement they've shared with me so far on this journey. Those words have meant more than you'll ever know. I wish for you all the same...happiness and blessings beyond your wildest dreams.

So for now...We sign off.

Yummy!

Our photographer blogged about the photo session she did with our yummy little munchkin at 2 weeks. I'm so happy with how all of his photos turned out. It seems like he's grown so much in the 4 short weeks since these were taken...

Segen's Birthday...5 Weeks Later

Tuesday, June 16th. We left the house shortly before 7 a.m. and took one last picture with Duke as our "only child." I don't think it had actually sunk-in that we'd be having a baby that day.

We arrived at the birthing center and were greeted by our nurse Amanda...who could have only been like 22 or 23. She hooked up to IV fluids and started the Pitosin drip right away. About 20 minutes passed and I still felt pretty comfortable. I was assuming this would be an all-day affair. I reassured C. that he would have enough time to run home and get my body pillow and favorite water bottle...I was wrong! Around 8:30 a.m., Dr. OB stopped in for a visit. Always a prankster, he scolded me that I was late for my induction...trying to rattle me! He then checked my cervix which was STILL at a 2 and very posterior, and broke my water. He decided to put in an internal catheter to closer monitor my contractions, and a scalp electrode on our little one because he was moving around so much we couldn't keep baby's heartbeat on the monitor. Dr. OB said the catheter often "gets things going" because it irritates the uterus. He wasn't wasting ANY time! I was completely unprepared for how quickly the contractions would accelerate. Within 20-30 minutes, I was feeling strong waves every 2-2.5 minutes. Thankfully, C. returned with the requested items around 9:30. Labor continued to intensify.

Around 11:30 a.m. I starting thinking about pain management. The waves were so gripping, I held back tears. I asked about an epidural. I knew that it could take awhile to get things started. The nurse checked me again and I was at 4 cm and 100 percent effaced. She called Dr. OB and he wanted me to sit in the whirlpool tub for 40 minutes before OK'ing the epidural. At this point, I didn't want anyone to touch me and the breathing techniques were doing NOTHING for the pain! I gutted it out in the tub for the 40 minutes and then waited another 30-40 minutes for anesthesia to get my epidural going. I had been laboring for almost 5 hours.

Once anesthesia placed my epidural, I slowly started to feel some relief. Unfortunately, the nurses were quietly discussing something about baby's heart rate. I heard the word "deceleration." They put me on supplemental oxygen to try to get the baby to respond. It appeared that he wasn't tolerating the contractions very well. Oxygen appeared to help.

Soon after, the doctor came in to check how I was progressing, and the look on his face scared me. No more joking...everything became very serious. He told Amanda to come and check me again. He said: "Do you feel how puffy the cervix is?" She said yes. He then scolded her in front of husband and I. He used the phrase "ominous sign," and told her that she needed to call him right away when something like this was happening. I was in shock. Terrified. After an explanation that baby's head/skull wasn't turned correctly and was actually hitting my pelvis...bone on bone...the doctor advised that we prepare to deliver baby right away via c-section. We were going to meet our little boy much sooner than we had anticipated.

C. suited up in scrubs, anesthesia added additional drugs to my epidural and we were whisked off to surgery. Even during the actual delivery, Dr. OB had to make light of the situation and asked one of his nurses to "Hold the instruction book higher so he could make-out the illustrations!" And then it happened...we heard the cry. I cried. We saw our little chipmunk. He sprayed pee everywhere as he entered the world. His Apgars were 9 and 9. Our baby was OK. I cried some more.

After putting me back together, it was discovered that anesthesia had accidentally given me morphine for pain. I am allergic to morphine. I had a big red band on my arm that clearly said "MORPHINE." The anesthesiologist was beside himself with regret. He promised to take good care of me about a million times and pumped me full of something to try to offset the reaction. He's VERY lucky that at this point, all I wanted to do was hold and feed my baby. Fortunately, the itching only lasted for three of the four days of my hospital stay and I didn't get any hives.

The three of us were reunited in our room, and I asked to feed Segen and he latched on like a champ. He snacked for about 20 minutes, and then decided to fill his diaper and then some. He had meconium from his chin to his shoulder blades. He had his very first sponge bath within an hour of being born! Ahhhh...so this is what motherhood is going to be like, huh?

Finally, our family of three (plus one big, furry doggie!) was complete.

Friday Night at the Fair

I've been working on this post in bits and pieces for the past 4 days...finding moments between Segen's little cat naps and feeding time. Just when I think I have a routine down, our little guy throws me a curve ball and decides to sleep all afternoon or keep me up until 3 am in fitful cries. Each day brings unique challenges and wonderful moments of bonding...and they all fly by! I can't believe our guy is already a month old. He's getting so big!

We had a fantastic night out last Friday at the fair. Our little chipmunk decided to sleep the entire time, but that didn't stop us from taking advantage of some classic photo ops!

Enjoying the super yummy footlong corndogs with mommy and daddy...sleeping.

Listening to the super loud music and watching rides...sleeping.

Hanging out with the goats at the petting zoo...sleeping.

And finally, posing with daddy...sleeping? Or is that a smile I see on his face? Sometimes, I swear he's faking us out and only "pretending" to sleep to avoid more pictures!

We then spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the lake cabin, and Segen even got to try on his lifejacket for the very first time for a nice, sunny pontoon ride. (Which he also slept through. Go figure.)

Sitting on Grandma's lap enjoying a complemntary beverage on the cruise.

Posing with mommy and daddy after an exhausing ride. (Can you tell he's about to have a melt down? Red face?)

We've been on the go-go-go! So what have you all been busy with this summer?

New Baby = No Blogging

Wow! There is NO way to adequately explain how a baby consumes your life. It's amazing, exhausting, frustrating and rewarding all at the same time. With that in mind, I'll do a quick bullet point update on the last two weeks highlights and events of note.

*Lost umbi stump on Monday, June 29th. Momma was almost a bit teary that the final physical "link" between the two had disconnected.

*Met new pediatrician on July 1st. Weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs. 12 oz! Putting on weight like a champ. Taking bottles of pumped milk during the day when fussiness seems to keep him from eating well at the breast.

*Also had first photo shoot on July 1st. Right on cue...filled diaper upon arrival at the studio.

*July 2nd...First real outing to cousin's birthday party at the State Park. Slept the entire time.

*Spent the 4th of July weekend (Mommy's big 3-0!) at the lake with cousins Big H and Little H.

*Got first submersion bath and actually seemed to enjoy it!

*Loving the Baby Bj.orn, being held and stroller rides. Hating swing and vibro chair. Basically attached to mommy in one way or another unless sleeping.

*Super-fussy-freak-out time is officially set for 12:30-1:30 am every morning. Sleeping 2.5-3.5 hours at night. Mommy and Daddy are often at wit's end to soothe baby. Ordered Happ.iest Ba.by on the Blo.ck DVD with high hopes for some help!

*Mommy has finally learned to rest when Segen's resting...after crashing the first week trying to keep up with housework while he slept. That was not smart.

*Big brother Duke is absolutely exhausted from all of the late nights and early mornings!

*Likes to be swaddled to sleep and likes the sound of a "fuzzy" radio station or his soothing teddy bear. Also loves to sleep with hands next to face.

*Going to the fair tonight to enjoy some yummy food and a stroller ride with mommy and daddy!

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Duke's Big Day

Happy 5th Birthday, Duke! We didn't forget about you! (Ok...well...we kinda did!) But of course, our furry little boy is still ready to party!

One Week Later

I can't believe how much our little guy has changed in just one week...although it could be my blurry vision from lack of sleep. Segen is a MONSTER eater. He loves him some booby. We met with our lactation consultant yesterday, and he's already up to 8 pounds 6 ounces!

His birth story will have to wait until I have more than two minutes to sit and type...which could very likely be a good 12-16 years! But until then, a few more pictures of the newest man in my life will have to suffice.

As always, thanks to everyone who took time to leave such kind comments about his arrival!

One Year!?!

Today is my one year blogoversary! I remember how desperate and sad I felt at this time last year. Traveling back and reading my very first posts (In The Beginning and The Beginning of the End and Failure to Communicate) is a gut-wrenching trip. I remeber how I sobbed as I recounted our loss. I remember lots of crying in those days. But now as I reflect, I'm so thankful that I didn't give up, sought emotional/physical/spiritual support and fought for proper medical care and diagnosis.

Thank you to all who have been a part of my journey so far!

The countdown begins again...

It's official. D-Day (induction) is now set for Tuesday, June 16th. We are to arrive at the birthing center promptly at 7 a.m. There IS a light at the end of this tunnel. My bruised belly, sore hips and frazzled emotions couldn't possibly be any more excited or relieved!

39 weeks and 1 day

Single digits?! How is it possible that I'm only 6 days away from my due date?! I look back over the past year and I'm awed and amazed at where we've come from.

I've reverted back to scrutinizing every single symptom my body has...cramping, twinges, bathroom habits, pressure, random bodily fluids, baby's position and movement. Helllooo....2 week wait all over again! Just when I think: "I can't possibly be any more uncomfortable!" My body surprises me with a new ache, pain or strain. My mantra for the past couple of weeks has been: It's all temporary!

I saw Dr. OB Thursday afternoon, and my stubborn cervix is still holding strong at about a 2 and I'm 60 percent effaced. He explained that theoretically we "could" choose to induce at this point, but because of the position of my cervix (still tucked way back behind baby's head) we'd be inducing into about a 50-50 chance of C-section. Baby Pat still looks fantastic on his weekly non-stress tests and my blood pressure (118/20) and weight (officially up 20 pounds!) indicate that I'm doing well, too. I think it would be difficult to justify the risk of major surgery, with my risk for clotting problems, when baby and mama are both doing well. Soooo...we decided to wait-it-out. For now. I see Dr. OB and have another NST on Tuesday. Hopefully we'll see some more progress at that stage. I think I've finally (maybe?) come to terms with the fact that I'm in control of NONE of this...and that scares the crap out of this Type A, control freak!

And yes...we've gotten ALL kinds of advice about bringing on labor. Eat spicy food. Take lots of long walks. Have bunches of crazy sex...and you've got to be kidding me with this one?! Squatting with and without a birthing ball. At my massage appointment yesterday, the therapist even gave me a chart of acupressure points on the ear that are supposed to bring on labor. I honestly think baby laughs at all my shenanigans and nestles in a little bit more snugly every time I even attempt to coax him out!

So for now, I'm still pregnant. And I know that it won't last forever. So I wait. And I clean. And of course, I worry. But above all, I enjoy the last few days of bladder jabs, rib kicks, 1 am flutters and hiccups because I know that they soon will become diaper changes, inconsolable wails and 2...4...6 am feedings. Please remind me why I want to rush this little guy out?!

Just What Momma Mel Needed!

Spa tubs are the best invention EVER! Saturday night, I attended the wedding ceremony with mom and dad-in-law (I couldn't miss seeing husband in a tux!), had a lovely meal with lots of young, drunken early 20-somethings and quickly retreated to our room before the dance got started. It was absolute h-e-a-v-e-n! We had the privilege of staying in a very nice presidential suite, but you could have put me in a room with a twin bed and this tub and I would have been a very happy girl. Although sleeping in the dog-hair-free California king with 10 pillows (yes, 10!) wasn't too shabby either. I was so excited about the tub...I had to take a picture.

Duke was also beyond excited that we took out his backyard "spa tub" on Sunday. He loves water just about as much as mommy!

38 weeks and the Magic #2

It appears as if we're moving in the right direction! After an unscheduled visit to the lovely staff on the labor and delivery floor on Tuesday night, and hearing the disappointing news that I was only a "fingertip" dilated, I received BETTER news at my regular OB appointment yesterday...2cm! Now that's progress. (Even though my boss had to tell me she was at a 2 for the entire last month of her pregnancy. Bah humbug!)

All day Tuesday, I kept experiencing these little gushes of clear fluid...enough to require me to use liners in my super-big-girl-panties to be comfortable. After debating whether I was just being a big wussy/hypochondriac for most of the evening, I finally called the L&D floor Tuesday night around 10 p.m. and asked the nurse's opinion about coming up to get checked. She reassured me that it would NOT be a bad idea to err on the side of caution and make sure baby was doing ok. They also wanted to be sure I didn't have a "high leak." So after nearly 3 hours on the NST machine, a coochie swab, a near-fainting/puking episode and several test strips to check the pH of said secretions, the medical team pretty much decided they couldn't narrow-down what was going on, but baby appeared to be just fine. Weary husband and I collected our things and went home to sleep.

The countdown is REALLY on...just 14 days! Carpet has been installed, but house painting has yet to commence. Baby clothes are washed and put away and my hospital bag is (mostly) packed. Husband is in a wedding this weekend, and his parents are coming up to stay with us despite my NUMEROUS pleas NOT to have ANY overnight company until this baby is born!! I think I may just go to the wedding ceremony with mom and dad-in-law and rent myself a room at the hotel where the reception is being held so I can enjoy some peace and quiet...along with a big whirlpool tub, some room service and a pay-per-view movie. (How terrible am I?!) I have zero interest in entertaining guests, and helplessly watching my newly cleaned and prepared "nest" be invaded by company would be enough to drive me bonkers at this point. I think it's best for everyone's safety if the guests made themselves at home WITHOUT me!

I've talked myself into it...terrible person or not...I'm off to book a room!

36 weeks 5 days and Miscellany

I had to include this picture in my post. This is my precious 6 month-old nephew, Little H. He decided that C's cheek looked delicious! Pretty adorable, huh? He's going to be our little guy's daycare buddy at Nanna's house this fall.

The past month has basically been a whirlwind of appointments. I'm now seeing Dr. OB and having non-stress tests weekly. I visited with my hematologist last week and discussed the possibility of induction (what?!) once I get closer to my due date. It all still feels very surreal. I have been prepared this entire pregnancy to have a pre-term, emergency c-section for a breech baby. Amazingly, I've actually come out on the "normal" side of statistics thus far. We have a healthy baby boy, head-down, who's showing no sign of making his entrance at 36 weeks and 5 days.

I had my first manual check at my Monday appointment. Cervix has softened, but I'm not dilated at this point. Doctor OB is NOT on the same page as hemo about induction. Go figure. I had to call hemo's office and ask for some help working with Dr. OB. How exactly is it my job to go back and forth with different information!? They work in the same hospital system, but obviously have very different views on pregnancies/labor and delivery. I'm not ready to risk this little guy's life because they have a difference of opinion. I'm all about letting him make his entrance naturally, but if that's going to put my life or his life in danger, NO WAY!

Breastfeeding class last weekend with our lactation consultant Fran, was very helpful! I went from feeling like I knew ZERO about feeding to actually being pretty comfortable with my body and my ability! C. said he would have liked to see more real-life demonstrations. The fake stuffed breast was apparently not very "realistic." Goofy boys.

I'm happy to report my car is as good as new. New paint. New sheet metal "skins" on the doors...whatever those are!

Is it completely silly to be taking-on two major house projects just a few weeks before our due date? We're in the process (read: waiting for painter/contractor to get their arses in gear) of painting the exterior of our home and re-carpeting the entire lower level. At this point, I just want things put back together!

I almost lost it at Moth.erhood Mat.er.nity today. As I placed the dress I wanted to purchase to wear to my baby shower this weekend (A little last minute you say?! Sigh. Long story.) on the counter, the sales lady asked me how many weeks I had left. I replied "just about three," and the girl next to me squealed "MEEEE TOO!" I proceeded to look down at her baby bump that I SWEAR was resting directly between her legs. Her baby was THAT low. Then I looked at my bump wedged up under my ribs. I wanted to cry. Either our baby has a huge butt and his head is low or he's still just riding that high.

And finally, before I put everyone to sleep, my newest tummy pics. I'm 5'9" and most of my height is in my torso. I can't even imagine what my poor mother went through when she carried high and very central like this with a 5'0" frame. The woman is a saint.

May 16th, 2008

One year later.

Life has changed in very profound ways over the past year. But the empty space created here in my heart when you left us too soon still remains the same. I'm reminded of you as I prepare your brother's nursery...folding tiny little clothes and socks that could have been placed on your feet...filling picture frames that could have been occupied with your tiny smiles...and I cry. I cry not because you are "lost." I cry because I miss you. I often selfishly wish that it was me and your daddy who were holding you, but I know that your Heavenly Father is holding you in His perfect embrace. I know that one day, we will see you again.

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to weep, a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
Ecclesiastes 3:1,4.

Mommy will love you forever.

Racing Stripes

A newly 17 year-old boy and his little buddies decided my car needed a racing stripe down the entire passenger side. Nice new look, huh? Thankfully I was approaching an intersection and only going about 15-20 mph when this happened. Of course, the kid's "tank"...a 1987 Buick...had zero damage. Go figure. He also claimed total responsibility. (Uh, Duh?!)

I have to keep reminding myself...it could have been SO much worse. But it didn't help my nerves/temper/hormonal-ness that the police officer who came to the accident scene was a major a-hole who really didn't care about helping us out (officer simply know as # 298) or that the crash happened right in front of the city's Grey.hound bus station. We had ALL kinds of very...ummmm..."savory" individuals checking out the scene. The officer also made this kid and I sit next to one another in the backseat of his squad car on hard little plastic seats for nearly 30 minutes because it was more "convenient" for him to ask questions that way. Can you say...slightly awkward?!

I think I'm going to start driving one of these:
